WikiNote is a multilingual, web-based, free-content educational note making project supported by the WikiNote Foundation and based on a model of openly editable content. The name "WikiNote" is a portmanteau of the words wiki (a technology for creating collaborative websites, from the Hawaiian word wiki, meaning "quick") and note.

WikiNote is written collaboratively by largely anonymous volunteers who write without pay. Anyone with internet access can write and make changes to WikiNote articles, except in limited cases where editing is restricted to prevent disruption or vandalism. Users can contribute anonymously, under a pseudonym, or, if they choose to, with their real identity.

The fundamental principles by which WikiNote operates are the five pillars. What is contributed is more important than the expertise or qualifications of the contributor. What will remain depends upon whether the content is free of copyright restrictions, contentious material unnecessary in respect of the Institution for which it has been created, and whether it fits within WikiNote's policies, including being verifiable against a published reliable source, thereby excluding editors' opinions and beliefs and unreviewed research.
Contributions cannot damage WikiNote because the software allows easy reversal of mistakes and many experienced editors are watching to help ensure that edits are cumulative improvements.

WikiNote History

WikiNote was conceptualized and designed in year 2016. In 2017, it was first used on pilot basis for an engineering subject for Pune University's college SKNCOE. It received tremendous response with many teachers and students participating in note making. Currently it aspires to cover all subjects of engineering and technology in academic year 2017-2018.

Along with engineering sections, WikiNote Foundation is also trying to include vocational courses in near future. These courses can prove useful for improving employibility as well as expertising the hobbies.

WikiNote Contributors

Anyone with Web access can edit WikiNote, and this openness encourages inclusion of a tremendous amount of content. But considering its focus on domain specializations, WikiNote is trying to collaborate mainly with educators for their high quality content. Their initial contributions are updated and reworked by other editors as per needs of the exams.

Several mechanisms are in place to help WikiNote members carry out the important work of crafting a high-quality resource while maintaining civility. Editors are able to watch pages and technically skilled persons can write editing programs to keep track of or rectify bad edits. Where there are disagreements on how to display facts, editors often work together to compile an article that fairly represents current expert opinion on the subject.

At this initial level, WikiNote Foundation is taking most of the content generation work itself. Although the WikiNote Foundation owns the site, it intends to get uninvolved in writing and daily operations. It believes in setting a mechanism where all content generation will be taken place with very less interference of board members of WikiNote Foundation.

"WikiNote" is to be a registered trademark of the not-for-profit WikiNote Foundation, which is to be built by user contributions.

Most of WikiNote's text and many of its images are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 Unported License. Its content is freely reusable for non-commercial nature with certain conditions (See WikiNote content licensing). If any external text or image is used with licensing restrictions, it will be removed as soon as it is noticed by editors or a request is made by the license holder.

Contributions remain the property of their creators, while the CC-BY-SA license ensures the content is freely distributable and reproducible. (See content disclaimer for more information.)


Text on WikiNote is a collaborative work, and the efforts of individual contributors to a page are recorded in that page's history, which is publicly viewable. Information on the authorship of images and other media, such as sound files, can be found in references section, which includes the author and source, where appropriate, along with other information.

Exploring WikiNote

Many visitors come to WikiNote to acquire knowledge, while others come to share knowledge. At this very instant, dozens of articles are being improved, and new articles are also being created.

The content is organized into categories of Institutions, Examiantions and Subjects. This classification helps students to learn as per their exact demand instead of finding a needle in a haystack. For instance, a simple addition of two numbers at school level is different that addition of two complex numbers which may be in syllabus of higher levels. Hence it is important to differentiate between scopes of such learning levels. Even in the school of Humanities, this segregation is imperative. For example, philosophy of Vedantic Monism (Ekantvaad) can be learnt in different details in different contexts like religious and philosophical ones.

The content organization on WikiNote is like this: Institution > Examination > Subject > Chapter > Article

Articles can be found using the search box on the top-right side of the screen. Users may enter a Search page allowing application of filters to pin point a search operation.

Basic Navigation in WikiNote

WikiNote articles are all linked, or cross-referenced. When highlighted text like this is seen, it means there is a link to some relevant article or WikiNote page with further in-depth information. Holding the mouse over the link will often show to where the link will lead.

Additional links can be easily made if a relevant link is missing—this is one simple way to contribute.


Search box on uppermost part of any page gives suggestions for entered term. These suggestions are categorized as Page Names, Page Content and Attachments with respect to entered term.


This is also an efficient way of navigating WikiNote. It lists all the child pages for selected page. This is also helpful in finding orphan pages which are not yet linked anywhere.


Drawer provides links to some important and frequently used places on WikiNote. 

Using WikiNote as a Research Tool

WikiNote tries best to have initial notes prepared by subject experts. It automatically increases authenticity of content. 

But as wiki documents, articles are never considered complete and may be continually edited and improved. Over time, this generally results in an upward trend of quality and a growing consensus over a neutral representation of information for contentious topics.

There is also a change in facts dynamically. For instance, current Maternal Mortality Ration (MMR) of India can be 148 which may improve to 100 after 2 years. But this improvement need not reflect immediately in document if no one has edited it there yet. So, cross checking the references for a given fact can help assess it's authenticity.

WikiNote vs Paper Notes

Unlike printed books or notes, WikiNote is continually created and updated. It intends to collaborate with mainly teachers, professors, educators or any reader for free content generation. In addition to quantity, its contributors work on improving quality as well. WikiNote is a work-in-progress, with articles in various stages of completion. As articles develop, they tend to become more comprehensive and balanced. Quality also improves over time as misinformation and other errors are removed or repaired.

Advantages of WikiNote over traditional books/ notes

  • Content on WikiNote is not limited in space; it can keep growing as fast as people add to it.
  • There are no qualifications required to be able to author its articles. Therefore, it has a very large pool of contributors.
  • WikiNote is dynamic (not static like paper notes); you don't have to wait for the next edition to come out (there are no editions on WikiNote), as WikiNote is published on-line as it is written on-line. You can update WikiNote at any instant, and people do so continually around the clock, thereby helping each other.
  • Very low "publishing" cost for adding or expanding entries, as it is on-line, with no need to buy paper or ink for distribution. This makes WikiNote available for free, making it more accessible to everyone.
  • WikiNote is extra-linear (more than linear). Instead of in-line explanations, WikiNote incorporates hypertext in the form of wikilinks. Logically and categorically organized content on WikiNote is a robust network of links, providing another dimension of knowledge accessibility. The Site also has correlates to tables of contents and indexes, with each entry in them hyperlinked to an article on the topic specified.
  • Option to add video lectures to the specific point (instead of lecture for whole chapter) which increases efficiency by reducing time wastage. It also helps cover each point of syllabus in required details.
  • Being a multilingual site, WikiNote tries to provide a platform to minority language speakers to organize content in their language.
  • WikiNote uses text, audios, images and videos to learn; it helps to include subjects related to traditioanal and vocational occupations.
  • Each WikiNote article intends to have an introduction summarizing the more extensive detail of its contents.
  • Being an open to anyone to edit website, articles on WikiNote are subject to additions that are erroneous or written poorly. But being a community effort, people are involved helping to improve the work, fixing problems they encounter along the way.


There can be some disadvantages in screen learning. Researches have proved strain on eyes, difficulties in concentrating in online learning and other effects. 

But we are committed to reduce and eliminate such side effects by innovative as well as other tested ways.

Strengths, Weaknesses, and Article quality in WikiNote

WikiNote's greatest strengths, weaknesses, and differences all arise because it is open to anyone, it has a large contributor base, and its articles are written by consensus. These factors and their implications are discussed here.

  • Large contributor base: A large number of editors contributing at any moment also means that WikiNote can produce a whole subject within hours or at most a few days. For instance, a subject having 10 chapters and 5 topics each chapter means total 50 topics. If 50 students of a class decide to make notes of the subject, and if it would take 1 hour each, they can complete a subject within an hour in best case. WikiNote even tries to reduce irrelevancy of content such created by collaborating with educators for their content as a starting point.
    In case of subjects of social sciences and humanities, their may arise differences which may not be solved by mere concensus. But restricting scope of an article to relevant institution only, such differences will be negligible.
  • Anyone can edit: WikiNote can be easily vandalized although blatant vandalism is usually easily spotted and rapidly corrected. It is also susceptible to unchecked information, which requires removal. WikiNote's open approach tremendously increases the chances that any particular factual error or misleading statement will be relatively promptly corrected. Numerous editors at any given time are monitoring recent changes and edits to articles on their watchlists.
  • Open and transparent consensus: While encyclopediac wikis like Wikipedia may have difficulties in reaching consensus among editors, WikiNote has less chances of it. This is because, here the content scope is restricted to the educational institution for which the content is being written.
  • Written largely by amateurs: One advantage to having amateurs write is that they have more free time on their hands so that they can make rapid changes in response to current events. But involving teachers and subject experts for the course is always good option.

Contributing to WikiNote

Editing WikiNote Pages

Anyone can contribute to WikiNote by clicking on the Edit icon in an article. Before beginning to contribute, however, read some handy helping tools such as the tutorial and the guidelines. Creating an account offers many benefits. It is important to realize that in contributing to WikiNote, users are expected to be civil and neutral, respecting all points of view, and only add verifiable and factual information rather than personal views and opinions. "The five pillars of WikiNote" cover this approach and are recommended reading before editing. (Vandals are reported via the Administrator Notice Board and may be temporarily or permanently blocked from editing WikiNote.)

If you are still not comfotable with editing but want to update any point, just comment your desired changes on page in comment section at the bottom of page. There is always a chance that other editors might see the comments and update the page if necessary.

WikiNote Content Criteria

  1. Neutral point of view:  It is WikiNote's mandatory core approach to neutral, unbiased article-writing.
  2. No original research: It prohibits the use of WikiNote to publish personal views and original research of editors and defines WikiNote's role in organizing existing recognized knowledge for only learning.
  3. Verifiability: It must be possible for readers to verify all content against credible external sources.
  4. Reliable sources: A source should be acceptable and reliable; normally, the sources are provided by institutions themselves as per their relevant needs.
  5. Citing sources: Citing sources so that readers can verify content for themselves.
  6. Writing Style: In general editors tend to acquire knowledge of appropriate writing styles and detailed formatting over time. It should be simple enough to be understood by learners but not necessarily jargon-free. The special words and jargons are welcome as per the need of the course.

Content Administration, Oversight, and Management

The WikiNote community is largely self-organising, so that anyone may build a reputation as a competent editor and become involved in any role s/he may choose. Individuals often will choose to become involved in specialised tasks, such as reviewing articles, watching current edits for vandalism, watching newly created articles for quality control purposes, or similar roles. Editors who believe they can serve the community better by taking on additional administrative responsibility may ask their peers for agreement to undertake such responsibilities. This structure enforces meritocracy and communal standards of editorship and conduct. At present a minimum approval of 75–80% from the institution/ department is required to take on these additional tools and responsibilities. This standard tends to ensure a high level of experience, trust, and familiarity across a broad front of aspects within WikiNote.

Handling Disputes and Abuse

WikiNote has a rich set of methods to handle most abuses that commonly arise. These methods are well-tested and should be relied upon.

Intentional vandalism can be reported and corrected by anyone.

Unresolved disputes between editors, whether based upon behavior, editorial approach, or validity of content, can be addressed through the message stream feature or through requesting comments from other editors.

Abuse of user accounts, such as the creation of "Internet sock puppets" or solicitation of friends and other parties to enforce a non-neutral viewpoint or inappropriate consensus within a discussion, or to disrupt other WikiNote processes in an annoying manner, are addressed through the sock puppet policy.
